{February 15, 2011}   Life on a Plantation – The Diary of a Slave Master

William Byrd (1674-1744) was a member of the Virginia upper class and as the owner of several plantations, owned many slaves. He wrote a diary giving details of life on a plantation which he wrote in code, which means he never meant his words to be read. As a result the source gives an unbridled view on how a plantation was run and how the slaves who lived there were treated.
